To create a communication flow of information running between the operator and the system, SCADA sends information from its wired network. It also takes aid from the internet to make operations smooth and fast in real-time. However, sensors cannot follow network protocols (which are required for information transferred through the net). That is why RTUs are used in such cases.
SCADA can present the information collected from various sensors and substations so that it is easy to interpret by humans. SCADA makes use of the HMI system to make all the data visible to the operator, which otherwise would be nearly impossible, considering the complexity of so much input. the information that SCADA received comes from small, large or medium substations. They can also detect issues in the system and raise an alarm.
While we know SCADA systems can work without any external help from humans, but in certain cases when the automated system either fails to act promptly, or due to any other reason, humans can control the system by manually operating the switches. With that said, SCADA can monitor and operate most devices without assistance.
Despite automation having been recognized in very large-scale industries, its utilization is yet to reach its full potential. There are many industries where SCADA can be implemented to automate manual processes, reduce cost of operation and streamline functioning. SCADA can perform redundant tasks with ease, and automatic back-ups to save information, which may otherwise be lost. this ensures reliable and quicker operations.
